Dr. Stephen Saris trained at Duke Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health. His primary area of interest was the experimental treatment of malignant brain tumors. Dr. Saris investigated a number of novel approaches, and at the time, he was most involved in, and known for two particular ones- boron neutron capture therapy and adoptive immunotherapy. He worked closely with Dr. Steven Rosenberg at the National Cancer Institute at a time of great interest in modified T cells and biological response modifiers such as IL2. He was additionally a primary investigator for the Brain Tumor Cooperative Group and the NABTT (a national consortium headed by Johns Hopkins). Dr. Saris had additional experience in brachytherapy (BTCG 87-01), various forms of chemotherapy, and sustained intratumoral release of BCNU.

He spent part of his career in private practice. While he has had a loose affiliation to the academic program at Brown University, Dr. Saris primarily took care of patients and performed approximately 300 surgeries per year. He had niche practices in radiofrequency lesions for tic douloureux and gamma knife radiosurgery. Dr. Saris ran the Spine Center at a local hospital (Landmark Medical Center) and was Chair of Neurosurgery at the main hospital for the archdiocese in Rhode Island (Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Providence).

Dr. Saris's current interest is working with neurosurgery residents in an outpatient setting. His objective is to take the best care of neurosurgery patients that he can, and impart the knowledge accumulated over 3+ decades to the young doctors who will take his place someday.
