Protect Your Feet in the Heat
Tips for keeping your feet healthy during the summer months.
Advice from the Providers at Podiatry Associates of Plainville
With the restrictions of a pandemic, you may not be able to take part in some of the activities that you did in previous years. Nonetheless, there are plenty of fun things you can do, safely. Whether you opt for a social distancing day at the beach or one running around at the park, keep these summer tips in mind to help maintain your foot health.
- Sunscreen is important to protect your whole body from sun damage and burns – don't forget to rub sunscreen on the top of your feet too!
- Save your bare feet for soft surfaces. You should wear shoes or sandals as much as possible to protect yourself from hot surfaces, stepping on sharp objects, or picking up athlete's foot and other infections while you're enjoying summer fun. If your gym has opened up, don't go in locker rooms, bathrooms, or public spaces without your shoes on – germs and bacteria can get under your nails or in small cuts that you can't see.
- Wear water shoes to prevent sharp rocks or sea shells from damaging the bottom of your feet. Before your next adventure, make sure your water shoes are completely dry to prevent the growth of bacteria or fungus.
- When wearing sandals, make sure you select a pair that is supportive, with a thick sole and lots of cushion. Flip flops are often too thin and flat and often lead to foot and arch pain.
- Wearing sandals or going barefoot may cause dry skin. Moisturize the bottom of your feet to minimize cracking or bleeding.
